A short, diverting musical |

This is the soundtrack from a mini-musical which premiered on the internet in the summer of 2008. As of this writing, it can be seen here. It tells the story of Dr. Horrible, a wanna-be supervillain. He's just trying to change the world, while fighting his nemesis, the fatuous Captain Hammer. Dr. Horrible wants to impress the Evil League of Evil, as well as Penny, the cute girl from the laundromat.
This musical was written by Joss Whedon, who gave us the Buffy musical. So if you hate that, or hate musicals, then don’t even bother. The songs are pleasant. I like them, but I think they’re definitely more enjoyable, maybe even affecting, if you’ve seen the movie and thus have some context. The cast is pretty good. Neil Patrick Harris is a Broadway veteran, and Nathan Fillion blusters wonderfully. One favorite is Captain Hammer’s “Everyone’s a Hero,” which is a banal melody with biting lyrics. Of course, if you just want an instrumental, there’s always the credits.
Request: “My Freeze Ray” “Brand New Day” “My Eyes” “Everyone’s a Hero”
Avoid: “Caring Hands” and “Penny’s Song” since Felicia Day is clearly the weakest singer, and the songs are a snore.

I can’t remember if I saw the show or heard the music first, but there was something a little different about it. Historically, musicals have not always been something I enjoyed, but I try to give everything a chance and I'm glad I did.
Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog has a quality that only those projects that are made for creative purposes --a labour of love-- possess. I believe it expresses the voice of the creators and performers well, it has character.
There is one track that became more powerful since watching the show and that’s Everything You Ever. The last line is so good, and gets better with every listen/viewing. Watch the show, listen to the soundtrack. Then watch and listen again. Squeeze every bit of meaning, depth and humour out of this neat little production.
